Victory for Weston All Saints in the Cricket

The Weston All Saints (WAS) cricket team kept up its run of victories against Southstoke with a a hard fought 37 run victory last night at Stothers in the annual 20/20 cricket match.

Skipper Duncan Nash won the toss an elected to bat and saw his team steadily get to 50 for the loss of 4 wickets including a majestic 28 from Rick James with usful contributions from Tim Markall, Paddy Bruce and Martyn Evans, before a string of wickets saw them collapse to 63 for 8. It was then left up to Duncan (30), Dan Davies (5*) and Russell Bell (2) to see them to a respectful 92 all out. A decent but beatable target.

If WAS batted below par then they certainly bowled and fielded above par, with all the bowlers performing very well. The opening pair of Dan and Josh Nicholson were as mean and fiery as Truman and Statham or Holding and Marshall. Between them they bowled 7 overs and took 3 wickets for 12 runs, the damage was done! However, Southstoke were able to field some talented middle order bats, who were well contained by Russell 3 overs 0-9 and Simon Butcher 3 overs 1 for 9. Tim Markall bowled an excellent and mean spell of 3 overs for 3 runs and was ably supported by Martyn and Paddy Bruce with some excellent wicket keeping from Paul Nicholson.

WAS were eventually left stranded on 65 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.

The game was played on a lovely sunny early Summers evening.

Thank you to Viv Nicholson and the girls for supplying fresh melon for refreshments.
