VIDEO Praying for the city of Bath

In mid February All Saints Weston joined with other churches throughout the city to hear from councilors, police, and business leaders about how to pray for the city.  We also prayed together in groups and as individuals interceding for those who needed it.

Depression - the next steps?

Following our recent mini-series on Depression (Sunday evenings, 13, 20, 27th January 2013) we would like to continue extending our support to anyone who suffers from depression and anyone who shares life with someone with depression. We have a few ideas:

  • a booklet of contacts for further support, books to read, basic information etc;
  • an informal, occasional drop-in coffee evening for anyone affected;
  • more structured support for individuals through prayer and listening;

We would also like ideas from the congregation and, of course , from anyone affected by depression. now or in the past.

Please add your comments here or get in touch with Adrian Jones : 01225 471400 or via this website (see "Staff Team" on our home page)

Thank you!

How will we respond?

How Will We Respond?

Murphy Davis

More than 30,000 children are dying of hunger today--are we crying out for them? They are under attack--are we angry? Have we met them in our prayers? Have we offered food to anyone who is hungry today? Or did we put it off because we were scheduled to go to a spirituality conference? Or because we were in a meeting talking about Christian unity? ... When our prayer and our action are both rooted in the compassionate heart of God and the grief of the earth and her children, then we are promised that we will bear the fruit of liberation, the flower of courage.

New: Sermon Search

One of our unique assets is our sermon back-catalogue.  We have had most sermons since the beginning of 2008 online (and yet more archived) - but if you didn't know the date of the recording you wanted, finding them was tricky.

So to help, we've created a sermon search.  This allows you to search on any combination of:

  • Speaker
  • Series
  • Bible reading book & chapter

We decided not to go down to the level of verse in the search as chapter tends to be granular enough.  The search works takes an "AND" approach - i.e. if you specify both a speaker and a series, only sermons where that speaker was talking on that series will be displayed.

Please give us any feedback.

August 1912

During 1912, exactly 100 years ago, the Weston Parish Notes were published every month, with reports on church life and details of the services to come. The August Notes included details of several trips recently taken by various church groups; the "Sunday School Treat" saw a party of 280, both children and adults, leaving Weston at 7.45am and travelling by bus then train to Weston-super-Mare, on 25th July. On reaching the sea front "the children scattered, after receiving each a penny for refreshment." At 3.45pm the party reassembled at Glass' Restaurant "for the important event of tea ....nothing could have been nicer.." The sunny day eventually drew to a close with leaving the station for home at 8.15pm; "the ride home to many was not the least enjoyable part of the outing."

Also in July, the Young Men's Bible Class  "had a most enjoyable trip to Ilfracombe." The group travelled at sea along the coast (presumably from Bristol) calling at Weston-super-Mare, Lynmouth and Minehead along the way. Not  everyone was confident about sailing so far: "I understand preparations on an extensive scale had been made by many in the way of dieting and physicking in order to stave off all chances of sea-sickness..." Meanwhile twenty members of the Church of England Men's Society also went to Weston-super-mare for afternoon tea, while the Young Women's Bible Class were taken by Nurse Burnett to Weymouth.

As I write, a modern-day group of men and boys from the church are spending the night camping around a fire in the countryside north of Bath, and last month our older folks in Senior All Saints had a day trip to Cardiff; back in May a large part of the church family spent the weekend together at Lee Abbey in Devon. Sharing time with each other, relaxing and having fun, even an adventure or two, seems to be recognised over the years as an important part of human happiness.

If you want to get ahead.....

At the bottom of my stairs, lying in a rather unsightly heap, you'll find a small collection of hats. All of them are mine and none of them is perfect. What I mean is that none of them is entirely satisfactory.

I have a real problem with hats; although I need to have one (in summer to keep the sun off my hairless head, and in winter to keep me warm) I have never found one that I like, which means one that I think looks good on me. Baseball cap, flat cap, beanie, panama ...none of them truly fits the bill, and I'm still searching for the elusive 'perfect' hat.....

Recently however, I came to the conclusion that my problem with hats is not about what's on my head so much as about what's in my head. I'm probably far too self-conscious, as if anyone else is actually bothered what I look like or not..... still, what goes on inside my head has an impact on what I put onto my head....

One of the very strong themes that comes through in the teaching of Jesus in the Gospels is that what happens on the inside of a human life, is far more important than what happens on the outside.....Jesus tells us that what comes out of the mouth makes a person clean or unclean (because it reflects our heart) not what goes in, Mt 15:11,....He has some hefty criticism for those people whose exterior life looks good, but doesn't really reflect what is in their hearts ("whitewashed tombs" Mt 23:27)....He tells us that the excluded tax collector is justified before God rather than the respectable Pharisee, because the tax collector knows that inside he needs the mercy of God, while the Pharisee depends on his external reputation and behaviour, Lk 18,....Jesus tells us that "blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God", rather than the rule-keepers Mt 5:8, ...."a person's life does not consist in the abundance of their possessions" Lk 12:15 ...."the water I will give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life..." Jn 4:14 ......and we could go on with more examples....

This is a counter-cultural message today, since the overwhelming outlook of our media and advertising, and most of our prevailing social attitudes, tells us that what is most important in life is the external ...what we look like, what impression we make, how successful we are, how clean our house is , how flashy our car or phone is, where we go for holidays, even what sort of partner we have on our arm when we go out....it's all about the external.....and this is a lie.

To be better disciples and to share the good news about Jesus more clearly and authentically, we need first of all to pay attention to our own interior lives....to be honest and straight with God, to face our own weaknesses and sinfulness, and to accept the love of God that wants to transform us into the people we were always meant to be. Then we will not only carry good news to the world but we will live out the good news, in lives that are consistent with the example Jesus gave us.

Looking back and moving on

Quite a week for memorable moments! Not only did we have all the London-based Jubilee events but of course our own Jubilee West Fest. At the open-air service on Sunday morning, up on the Rec, Patrick drew our attention to the idea of Jubilee in the Old Testament (Leviticus 25: 1-12) and the command to the Israelites to take every seventh year as a jubilee; without planting or working the ground - and then also to take every fiftieth year as an extra jubilee when everyone was commanded to return to the clan and to the family property. Patrick reminded us that for most people, this fifty year jubilee would only take place once in their lifetime ; therefore a very special and memorable occasion.

Most of us have special memories of particular events and occasions from childhood, and then of key moments or turning points in adult life. Remembering and talking about what has happened in the past can help us to resolve or leave behind hurts, to see pattern and purpose in our life, to gain strength and encouragement for the future, and to identify the questions and ambitions that shape how we live now.

As Christians we probably see within our life some times of God's intervention, blessing and help, as well as times when He seemed more distant and faith was a struggle. All of these things are part of our own unique life-map. It is just as important to remember and share these special moments in our life of faith.

But God does not call us to stand still and just remember; He calls us to a continuing journey with Him, as disciples of Jesus.

God longs for us to grow in faith, and that happens when we seek Him; God longs for deeper relationship with us but often we leave our meetings with Him in the hands of circumstances, or of those who lead our church services. How often do we intentionally remember and share all the good things that He has done for us, and has taught us? How often do we deliberately plan for our spiritual growth, to seek times and places of fresh encounter with God?

Is it time that you deliberately took another step on the journey of discipleship? Why not start by calling to mind what God has done for you over the years that you have been a Christian? Take a little notepad and jot down answers to questions like :

  • How did faith first grow in you?
  • Which other Christians have had the most influence on you, and how?
  • When have you been most conscious of God at work in your life?
  • When has faith been a struggle?
  • What have been the most significant moments in your life of faith so far?

and then you could think about "How do I want to grow in my discipleship now? What part of Christian faith or practice do I want to look at more closely? Where do I want to see God changing me or my life?"

Our life of faith should be more than just memories - if you would like a confidential conversation about your next step on the journey of discipleship, with a trained spiritual Companion from the All Saints team, then have a word with me and we'll take it from there. :)

Our new site

Welcome to the new (and hopefully improved) All Saints Weston Church web-site.

Time for change
In 2008 the web-team identified that the web-site was in need for an overhaul.  We faced a number of issues, the main being the complexity involved in updating the site; no ownership of information and as a result of these; stale/out-of-date information.

We made a major over-haul to make things easier for the site administrators, the only visible change was the introduction of the sermon archive.

New features
Last year together with the PCC we decided to completely refresh the site with a new back-end system and a fresh new design.  Our objectives were:

  • As much up-to-date information on the front page as possible
  • Latest church news available online
  • Consolodated pages with minimal clicks to find information
  • Reduced "stale" content
  • Ownership of pages by church members
  • A central hub for all of All Saints' Internet activity
  • RSS/Podcasts feeds for Events and Sermons

We expect to encounter a few teething issues and it is likely that the site will change over the next few months as we make fine-tweaks to the content and layout.

Feedback
The PCC have provided guidance and feedback to how they want to steer the site and we hope that this as resulted in a useful web-site for all of the congregation.  There is much more we have up our-sleeves for the future but would love to hear from you.  Please feel free to e-mail the web-team with any feedback, thoughts or issues.
