Where are you building?
The Wise and Foolish Builders
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV)
Sitting in the garden whilst enjoying the spring sunshine I noticed a Robin repeatedly flying in and out of our summer house. Unfortunately our summer house had become a victim of the stormy season and the wind had blown off one of the doors. This little Robin had discovered the furniture stored inside and had unwisely decided to build a nest in there not knowing that we were about to fix and repaint the whole building.
In this season of lockdown you may find that as many things have been stripped away, some of the day to day choices you have made up to this point have been revealed now as unstable and perhaps not as solid as you might have thought. You may be noticing a few small cracks in your walls and experiencing shaky foundations under your feet. You are probably feeling disoriented to some degree.
Unusual circumstances like this can be an opportunity to prayerfully consider your life and ask Jesus to reveal those things that you have built that may need to be fixed, taken down or completely redesigned. This may be the perfect time to lay down the stuff of today and ask the Lord what he wants instead. To fix our eyes on him and trust him with everything. To build our house on the rock rather than sand.
Jesus thank you that you are the same God yesterday, today and forever. That you never change despite the circumstances I find myself in today. Jesus show me those things in my life that are not built on your rock. Help me to live my life your way. I choose to lay it all down and I choose to trust you as my master builder. Thank you that you know exactly what needs to change and help me to see it too. Amen
