All Saints v Winsley 2020

This was a surprise and welcome opportunity for the All Saints Weston (ASW) cricketers to get a late Summer outing at the idyllic Winsley cricket ground.

Not only that, there was a bit of family rivalry going on with Johnny Wickens playing for the home side, whilst his brother Jordan played for ASW and Dad Paul umpired!

Due to the time of year, it was agreed to play a 24 over game.

The home skipper won the toss and decided to bat, therefore meaning All Saints were in the field.

Rob Tricky (1-32) and Jordan W (1-18) opened the bowling and immediately put pressure on the opposition batsman. The early highlight was Johnny W hitting his brother for a lofted 4 before Rob had him caught for a handy 13. It soon became apparent however that Winsley were a handy batting unit.  The next 4 Winsley bats all amassed runs aplenty, even though there was some steady bowling from messrs Peter Stoneley (1-38), James Couchman (0-27) and Martyn Evans (0-23). Skipper Duncan Nash bowled well and finished with 1-7 off two overs which helped keep the score down, but Winsley totalled a very hand 180 runs off their alloted overs at the half way point. Dylan Mathias was showed excellent glove work behind the stumps.

So out strode the ASW opening bats, Geoff White and Rick James. Unusually the talented Mr White was out early, but Rick continued his rich vain of form with the bat for ASW with a quick fire, no prisoners 22! He was ably assisted by Richie Newman, making his ASW debut (20) and Dylan who made an entertaining 36 not out. Although Duncan (4) and the "Goweresque" looking Will Loxton (5), fell cheaply, the middle order waded in with further runs, with Jordan hitting 17 and Martyn Evans a big hitting 22. At this point ASW were dangerously close to making the 181 run chase to win. Alas, they ran out of steam and overs and finished on a very competitive 155 for 8 with Rob Trickey left standing on 11 not out.

It was great to see some ASW support again with Ella Nash, Alison Stoneley, Paul & Josh Nicholson and the Mathias family amongst others all in attendance, it really added to the atmosphere, thank you. Thanks also to the Wickens family for arranging the match, it was great fun!
